Al:Bannach – 66 Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DS
website
Set just adjacent to Trafalgar Square, this stylish Scottish-themed bar and restaurant serves an incredible number of whiskies. It also serves a run of the mill white-rum mojito. But wait! They also serve a whisky based mojito – called a ‘moscito’....
Al:Bannach’s simple Bacardi-based mojito, served in a straight glass using bottled lime juice and gomme, is not one to go out of your way for, but if you’re in Trafalgar square and looking for a quick glass of lime and mint refreshment, you should certainly try their whisky-based variant (whisky purists should stop reading now!).
The ‘moscito’ has more bite (sorry!), combining “Monkey Shoulder” whisky with the standard mint, lime and sugar to create a Scottish twist. It’s a little sweet for my palette, but I can certainly say it works much better than you might think.
The Bar: 7/10 – stylish, well maintained and well staffed.
The Price: 7/10 – given the location, £7.50 for a standard mojito is not too shabby
The Mojito – Standard 5/10 (Meh), ‘Moscito’ 7/10 (Interesting).
Overall: 6/10
