Ping Pong - Tower Bridge House, St Katherine Docks, E1W 1AA
Despite being a seemingly run-of-the-mill dim sum place like you seem to find all along the Thames these days. This place does a Kumquat mojito!
Served without fanfare, the kumquat mojito is surprisingly like the original. At £5.95 it's good value, refreshing but, thanks to the gomme, a little too sweet. Unfortunately kumquat sounds exotic, but does not set the world on fire when used in a mojito already ruled by lime flavours. There's a slight tropical edge, but were not in "writing postcards home from a beach in Aruba" territory here...
They serve a regular mojito here too at the same price, which, unless you're clinically addicted to mint, is worth avoiding. It's also, somehow, 5p more that the kumquat one!
In closing, the mojito was unusual, but not unusual enough. This is a restaurant, however, and so I'm obliged to say that the dim sum is bloody outstanding!
Venue 5 - McDimsum
Value 8 - £5.95 (or £6) is impressive, but see below
Kumquat Mojito 6 - Competent, but promised more than it could deliver, and thus disappointing
Regular Mojito 5 - Pedestrian mint fetish.
